COLOR WONK

INTERMEDIATE - ADVANCED COLORING

MARKER + COLORED PENCIL INSTRUCTION WITH ILLUSTRATOR, AMY SHULKE

You’re tired of just coloring

Blending was fun but now you’re ready for something more…

Why does coloring look so easy but feel so hard?

  • Everyone said "learn how to blend", so you did!

  • They said "practice, practice, practice", so did that too

YouTube videos, tutorials, coloring classes— you’ve tried ‘em all.

You’re putting in the effort but…

Coloring is easier than it was before, but the look of your coloring hasn’t improved.

It's not like you want make art for museums... You just want to color better than you do right now.

COPIC OLO PRISMACOLOR HOLBEIN LUMINANCE DERWENT LIGHTFAST

Professional Illustrator, Amy Shulke shares a fine-arts approach to coloring

Color Wonk combines simple and effective coloring…

with lessons I’ve learned in years of art school and my work as a technical illustrator.

I’m not teaching nifty tricks I found yesterday. I teach coloring the same way artists learn to draw and paint.

Improve your coloring by improving how you think about color

  • Intermediate and advanced levels

  • Mixed Media coloring: Copic Markers & colored pencils - or substitute watercolor, pastel, etc. The color is the lesson, not the medium.

  • Minimal Supply lists

  • Maximum Impact

Good coloring happens between your ears - it's not about your hands

Color Wonk focuses on:

  • Form

Stop collecting fake-looking novelty techniques. Color Wonks learn to sculpt realistic forms with color. Never be stuck waiting for instructions about which colors to use and where to shade.

  • Realism

Students learn to read references and absorb inspiration from everyday objects. Realism is the ultimate puzzle, learning to capture the look of something without copying it exactly.

  • Confidence

With lessons on form, value, reference reading, artistic logic, and color theory— students learn to use the same concepts professional artists use to color anything, anytime, any way they want.

QUICK QUESTIONS

  • Color Wonk is for intermediate and advanced colorists— but to be honest, most colorists consider themself intermediate no matter how great or small their skills.

Wonks must be able to smoothly blend Copic or Olo markers without mentally coaching themself through the entire blending process.

For more info about my beginner courses, helpful workshops, and what level you might be, see our Skill page here.

  • I understand. If you look closely, we don’t use black outlines. Simply by removing the heavy outlines, projects instantly look less like coloring and more like a painting.

You also have to remember that I’m an artist with a BFA in illustration and 30 years of experience. I keep the techniques simple but sometimes they turn out photorealistic even when I’m coloring for fun.

That’s okay, we all color at our own level. I’ll show you my exact steps and even though you’re skeptical, many of your projects will turn out realistic too!

  • Excellent! This group may be exactly what you’re looking for.

I created Color Wonk to fill the need for something beyond blending-based coloring projects. Wonk projects will stretch your current skills using fine art concepts, color theory, and good old fashioned artistic logic.

With a BFA in Illustration and 25+ years of professional studio experience, I’m able to offer deeper insight and challenges than hobbyists who teach.

  • No problem. Colored pencils are much easier than markers!

I don’t do anything fancy with pencils, anyway.

We cover the pencil technique in every demo and most marker people pick it up easily in just a few projects.

  • Life gets in the way sometimes. It happens to us all.

Color Wonk does not have a schedule or deadlines. Most students are working on lessons which have been archived for months or even years so there’s never a rush to complete anything on a time table.

Relax. Color what you want. Color when you can.

Note: Your subscription to Color Wonk must be up to date and paid in full to access the lesson materials. Videos are not downloadable; you must be logged in to watch.

  • Sorry, but no. We’re doing fine art techniques which require artist grade alcohol markers. Despite what you’ve heard or read, inexpensive markers are not the same as Copic and Olo.

Inexpensive markers can not handle the kind of heavy layering and color mixing we do in Color Wonk.

I’m not being snobby, this is years of experience talking. I’d recommend cheaper markers if I could. They’re cheaper because they don’t work!

If you absolutely must use student or craft grade markers, then I’m the wrong instructor for you. There are other instructors who can teach you the tricks necessary to overcome their quirks and deficiencies.

  • Oh my! That’s a gigantic request. Color Wonk will grow in its first year to over 100 projects and lessons, each with their own unique supply list. We’re adding new projects and re-issuing classic projects constantly.

There’s simply no way to keep up with all the updates. Even if we could, the list would include optional colors plus many markers used just a few times.

Relax. I’m a minimalist when it comes to colors and I prefer to create colors through layering rather than buying more supplies. I make every effort to keep my supply lists small and smart.

  • Direct feedback and personalized advice from Amy is available as part of the Color Coach upgrade to your Color Wonk membership. Check out the Coaching tab once you’re inside the Wonk site for more info and whether seats are currently available.

At the basic Color Wonk membership level, you’ll have full access to our Wonk Community Forum. This is a great place for peer-to-peer support and advice from our many moderators and community stars. Amy does visit this forum and comments whenever possible but most of her time is spent creating new classes, videos, and offering support at Color Coach.

  • No. Color Wonk is a subscription membership to a large library of lessons, projects, and coloring resources.

You have full access to Wonk materials while your subscription is active and paid in full. Your access ends when your membership ends or when your payment lapses.

  • Color Coach is only open to members of Color Wonk so there’s a full description of the program once you join Color Wonk.

Spaces are limited but also, not everyone needs more help. Regular Color Wonk offers a ton of learning opportunities so this is really a decision to make later.

Color Coach is open to both intermediates and advanced students and focuses on the process of art and artistic coloring. The goal is to improve your mindset and approach which in turn makes skills and techniques easier.

STILL NOT SURE?

I get it. You want to color better but you’re iffy about the whole membership thing.

To be honest, I am too. For 12 years, I offered monthly intermediate and separate monthly advanced classes…

THAT’S 24 CLASSES x 12 YEARS = OMG!

And darn it, that’s just the monthly stuff! I also teach several beginner sessions a year and run 12 week courses.

My Workshop site was a tangle of classes. Nobody could tell which class to take next and everyone was afraid they’d miss something fun…

Membership makes it easy— for both of us.

OR MAYBE IT’S ME?

Unless I’ve bumped my cart into your’s at the grocery store, you don’t know me.

So here’s a solution: Hop onto my newsletter list.

Every Saturday, I send a fresh FREE lesson. Usually it’s about color theory but we also cover techniques, creativity, and supplies— from a coloring perspective.

Try it out. Try me out. I think you’ll like it.
